Meet BluScreen, another Bluetooth-based advertising system

While this isn't the first time that we've heard of Bluetooth-enabled advertising, we still think it's an intriguing idea. Researchers at the Department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton in the UK have come up with their own way to connect this nearly-ubiquitous cellphone technology with dynamic advertising in the department hallway, calling it BluScreen. The 22-inch hall-mounted screen is a working prototype that detects Bluetooth devices nearby and displays advertising and announcements once detected -- making sure to use each unique Bluetooth identifier to log what advertisements are displayed so that none are repeated. We wonder though, how this announcement will play out in Paris once the French get wind of it. They hate it when the English start competing with them.[Via NewScientistTech]
i hope the screen shows where the nearest fire exit is in the event of a fire, given that they've carelessly obscured part of the emergency exit sign
Is "Bluscreen" such a wise naming choice? I think "BSOD."

BluScreen, BluRay ... Blu is the new Black. All you fans of the HD-DVD name being more "user friendly" pay close attention.
Little out of date... I'm at Southampton Uni now, and had to do a presentation on this research - works with something called "BluNotes", which allows staff to leave personalised notes to people which only display when they walk past.
Its a really clever piece of kit, and lots of stuff with "Agents" to manage the adverts.

That looks more like a 30" Apple Cinema Display to me. Either that or Apple started making 22" displays and I never knew it and that doorway in the picture would a bit undersized then a standard doorway.

Bluetooth is not a "cellphone technology". It just happens to be included on many cell phones.
