We can all get a bit sensational at times, but
RTX Telecom apparently thinks its DualPhone 3088 is a marvel of modern science. Touting its "standalone nature" and "landline / Skype functionality" as quite the awe-inspiring duo, the admittedly average dual-function phone doesn't deviate too far from the path already blazed by other
computer-free solutions. The device can make and receive both traditional landline and
Skype In / Out calls without the need for your PC to be near or even powered on. Per usual, the phone includes a separate base station that sports inputs for your landline and router connection, and then broadcasts the signals wirelessly "up to 300 meters" to the cordless phone station set up elsewhere. It also features the latest DECT technology, an LCD to skim through your contact list, and claims to play nice with both Macs and PCs -- which makes perfect sense considering no computer is required at all. Nevertheless,
British users looking for a matte black option to juggle your landline and
VoIP calling duties can pick up the DualPhone 3088 now for £109.99 ($209).

I actually went to the manufacturer's website (www.dualphone.net) rather than at the reseller's place.
The base station on this thing looks big, an no the base station isn't the recharging cradle! It's a PS shaped box (albeit smaller I concede, but the next biggest thing after a PS3 in my place would be my frodge, I kid!!!).
Anyway this sounds very nice, now if only they could offer some future proof thingamagic with Skype AND SIP so I can stick it to Skype when they ar ebeing too greedy than this would be fine.
Little animals around the planet are having a party for this phone saving the planet from computers left on 24/7 just to run Skype about to being shut iff.

Can this be configured to work with other Voip services?

Nothing new. This has been around for a short while now.

I have the predecessor to this, the cordless dualphone USB which has been an excellent unit.
I'd love to upgrade but one thing I don't see is how many phones the base station supports and how to obtain additional phones+cradles.
If this is a 1 phone deal then I can't see much of an upgrade path (excepting the benefit of being able to shut down my PC)
Has anyone seen any information about whether or not it supports multiple handsets and how to obtain them?

Well I checked with the UK distributor and they said that they shipped out the first UK shipment to DST (www.home-phones.co.uk) only yesterday. Price is 99 inc VAT (plus shipping). See http://www.home-phones.co.uk/asp/product.asp?product=698.

How about a DualPhone for Skype users in the US? Please?

I actually have this unit. It works pretty well. The base unit is not that big - think about two decks of cards side by side. Otherwise, it isn't the most comfortable phone on the ear and the ring tones are really obnoxious - I mean really obnoxious, but it does its job.
