Ultra Product's 8GB SDHC hits for $150

Ok, you've seen plenty of 8GB SDHC cards right? And this one from Ultra Products is only class 2, SDHC's rock-bottom 2MB/sec data transfer rating. But get this, it's only $150, and it hails from good ol' Fletcher Ohio! Ok, it's likely OEM'd elsewhere, but Ultra's reselling it for just a Benj-and-a-half for 8 freakin' gigabytes of waffer-thin flash storage, about half that of same-spec'd cards already announced. Just remember, it's SDHC which means it will only work in the limited number of SDHC compliant devices currently available. You're also taking your chances with Vista's ReadyBoost smart caching -- ReadyBoost does support SD just as long you slot-in natively; external, USB 2.0 card readers are not supported. Already outed and on-line, so why not take a chance?

Transcend has been selling theirs for $142 for the past two weeks, and even ran a sale earlier this week for $124.

Eight gigs is enough for me to start thinking about replacing my laptop harddrive with one of these bad boys.

Unfortunately, with that super-slow transfer rate, not only would it not work as a system drive, it also wouldn't work for ReadyBoost. You'd be much better off with a really fast 1GB flash drive.

I understand that most people in the U.S. will be reading this blog, but certainly your readership pool is also everyone in the English-speaking world, i.e. Canada, UK, Australia, etc. Thomas, your constant use of the word Benjamin in place of $100 is starting to get irritating. Not only does it imply that every reader should be aware of the President your government has decided to place on your $100 note in order to read your story, but it stutters the flow of your article and does not provide a short cut (Benj-and-a-half vs. $150). I'm also not trying to be an ass, and I know you try to be snarky and use satire, but, Benjamin is not witty and it does not make you seem relaxed and cool. If you'd use it once, then maybe yes. Now, it's just annoying, sorry to say.

These writers also use slang terms for British currency which actually resulted in my looking up exactly how the system worked and the values of various bits.

I learned something. Try doing some of your own research. Besides when it all comes down to it, I in no way expect a blog based in another country to provide me with a translation. Why should engadget be different?

I hate to get on-topic and everything, but I'd never touch another Ultra Product wiht a 10 foot pole. I picked up a 1 gig SD card about 6 months back becuase after rebate it was $10 (that's 1/10th of a Benjamin, for those keeping track). Worst SD card I've ever owned. When (trying) to use with my Canon camera, it would only work the first time you turned the camera on. After that (subsequent power-ons), it would give me a memory card error (and yes, I tried formatting directly in the camera). After that, the only way to record images again was to eject the card and put it back in.

Returned the card and had a second shipped out immediately, which produced the exact same results.

Not worth the time/hassle for a card that doesn't work.

By the way readyboost does support external card readers, I'm using it right now. You just need a fast SD card.

Why not just use the SD standard? That way, older devices that can use FAT32 would also be able to use them. At least make it backwards-compatible. :(

Ben Franklin was an author, a scientist, an inventor, a diplomat, and dozens of other things besides (including "President" of Pennsylvannia), but what he most certainly was NOT was a U.S. President.

As far as the product goes, i wouldn't go for it. There seems to be more products out there that are not only better but cheap as well. As far as catachip and some/rest of you are concerned....So he didn't know that he was a president, well so what? Many Americans can not even tell you what the second or first parts of the constitution, or tell you many other fact. Second, directly to catachip get over it, its a blog. I hate to say this, but if your annoyed then stop reading. It is a freaken blog, and who gave you the right to express you feelings on how the author can or cant right? The constitution, but you don't live here. Moral of the story? Don't get "irritated" because so author of some blog used the word Benjamin. If your getting made at him for trying to be witty as well, you might as well get mad at hip hop artists that use that word, they are trying to be witty. We have two different cultures, and two different ideas of what witty is. Sorry to be off topic, thats all i have to say.

Point taken. I re-read the post, and it was pretty incoherent and rambling. I'll apologize for that. I do, however, stand by the fact that I was/am annoyed by Thomas' constant use of the slang for the US $100 bill - if only because he uses it so much that he drives it into the ground. But it's enough on that issue. I also apologize for my ignorance of Benjamin Franklin as NOT being a US President. I am Canadian, and we generally take pride in our knowledge of world history - of course, I would be impressed to find many Americans who know a single thing about Canadian history. But that is an issue of absurdly American-centric history cirriculum in the U.S. education system that I don't want to get in to, nor should be discussed in a tech blog about memory cards. I do fear this post has begun to ramble again, and of course, I do apologize - once again - for that.
